IMPORTANT
CHANGES TO CHECKED BAGGAGE POLICIES |
|
Unfortunately,
due to record fuel prices, airlines have been forced to implement baggage
fees to help offset the staggering costs. These fees will be collected at the ticket counter upon
check-in.
Packing lightly
is a largely neglected art for most of us. Now may be a good time to
try it out. You are still allowed to carry one piece of luggage on
board with you (along with a personal item such as a purse or a laptop)
free of charge. If you can get by with one carry-on, not only will
you save having to pay the baggage fees but you will eliminate waiting for
your bags upon arrival and the risk of lost luggage.
Here is an overview of the fees as of today:
| EFFECTIVE

AIRWAYS |

The above rates
are each way and for bags weighing less than 50 lbs. a piece.
Heavier bags have higher rates.
There are exceptions to these policies, such as travelers in First or
Business class or those holding elite status with the airline's frequent
flyer program. Policies may change at any time, we recommend that
you check every time you fly.
Please call us at 221-4791 with any questions.

NEWS UPDATES |
DELTA ADDS $25
BAG-CHECK FEE, BUT ENDS A FUEL SURCHARGE
Delta Air Lines, now the nation's biggest carrier, said Wednesday
that it would charge some passengers to check their first bag, but that it
was eliminating the fuel surcharges to book tickets using frequent-flyer
miles. Delta, whose merger with Northwest Airlines took place last week, was
the last holdout among major airlines in charging a first-bag fee. It said
it was adopting the fee as it matched its policies with Northwest, which was
among the airlines charging to check luggage. The airline said it
planned to charge $15 for checking the first bag, and $25 for a second bag,
for passengers traveling within the U.S. The new second-bag fee is half of
what Delta had been charging. The fee takes effect Dec. 5, and will
primarily affect passengers on discount economy-class tickets. (New York
Times)

PASS TIME WITH
THE 3 R'S
If you're traveling on business, you may want to grab your reading
stack before you head out. Airplanes are great places for the three R's--read,
review and reflect--said Dixon Osburn, a Washington management consultant
who has traveled more than 50,000 miles a year for a decade. Laptops can be
tricky to use in that "small cramped space" in the clouds, he
said. So he prefers print--including publications that can be discarded
along the way. He also likes to bring along financial statements, staff
reports or annual reports to review. "Editing is easy in a small
space," he said, especially on paper copies. Flying for business is
"the perfect time to strategize, brainstorm, reflect," he said.
Reflections could involve cooking up business ideas or setting personal
goals. For example, he used flight time to devise ways to challenge
his staff and board to maximize their small budget. Osborn said he's not
interrupted too often, once he pulls out his legal pad and puts on his
concentrated look. "When I'm engrossed in work, people are less
chatty." (Washington Post)

DELTA/NORTHWEST
MERGER CLEARED
Executives of Delta Air Lines say it will be business as usual--at
first--after federal regulators last week cleared Delta's merger with
Northwest Airlines, creating the world's largest airlines just 18 months
after Delta emerged from bankruptcy. The $2.6 billion swap deal--basically a
takeover of Northwest, which becomes a wholly owned subsidiary--gives Delta
a global span that could help raise Atlanta's profile as an international
hub. Travelers will not notice immediate changes to schedules, planes,
check-in procedures or frequent-flyer programs because of the merger. Delta
executives plan to gradually combine the airlines' operations over the next
two years. When the merger is completed, officials think it will
generate about $2 billion in annual cost savings or additional revenue by
melding Delta's and Northwest's largely complementary routes. But consumer
advocates worry that the merger could lead to higher fares because there are
fewer competitors and one airline will control a greater share of the
market. Government antitrust regulators, however, concluded last week that
the merger "is not likely to substantially lessen competition."
Combined, the companies will have $35 billion in revenues, 75,000 employees
and 770 mainline jets flying routes spanning the U.S. and reaching to
Europe, Asia and Africa. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

TRAVEL
AGENCIES SAVE YOU $56
PER ITINERARY ON AVERAGE OVER INTERNET SITES!
Topaz International conducted a comparative study of corporate travel
airfares between travel agencies and various internet sites, including
Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, and airline direct websites. In
2007,
Topaz findings show that business travel itineraries booked by a travel
agency averaged $56 less than the same itinerary booked on the internet.
Each year showed that traditional travel agencies obtain a lower or equal
fare over 90% of the time.

"Dressing For
Flight"
|
|
Should you wear you linen suit or
your khakis on the plane? You may not put much thought into what you
wear when flying , but there are plenty of factors to consider. Will
you be comfortable for the duration of the flight? Will your dress
be appropriate for the weather and occasion at you r destination?
And will your clothing aid or hinder your safety in the even of an
emergency? For comfort, stick to stretchy clothing and low walking
shoes. Be sure to check the weather forecast to see what Mother
Nature has in store for you at your destination. For business
travelers who must get down to business right off the plane, consider
joining an in-flight club where y you can either change clothes or at
least freshen up and iron out a few wrinkles. Short of that, stick
to polyester blends and other non-wrinkling fabrics. On the safety
front, the FAA suggests natural fiber clothing like cotton or wool to fare
better in a fire emergency. The y recommend leather soled,
low-heeled shoes as well as long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Now
that's clothing for thought!
